Food self-sufficiency has been achieved by Indonesia in 2025, according to President Prabowo Subianto during a grand harvest event in Karawang District, West Java Province, on Wednesday (January 7, 2026).
Jakarta (Indonesia Window) –President Prabowo Subianto announced that Indonesia had achieved food self-sufficiency by 2025, during a grand harvest event on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.On the occasion, President Prabowo also directly observed rice planting and harvesting activities in Indonesia’s Karawang District, West Java Province. In his speech, Prabowo highlighted an important note about food self-sufficiency. He stated that no nation can be independent if food cannot be provided for its people."It's impossible for a nation to be independent if its food needs are dependent on other nations, and this has been proven," he noted. The president explained that when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, countries with rice reserves were unwilling to sell to Indonesia. He, who was then serving as Minister of Defense, fully understood President Jokowi's efforts.“He flew here and there, negotiating with leaders of countries that had rice. Finally, because of his good relationships with several figures, they finally agreed," said Prabowo. He emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic was an eye-opener and a warning to the nation, and that Indonesia should not depend on other nations, especially for food and energy."Ladies and gentlemen, the Almighty has given us an extraordinary gift. It turns out that through agriculture, we can become independent of other nations," said the president."Not just about food, but also about energy. From palm oil, we can produce diesel. From cassava, we can produce ethanol for gasoline. From sugarcane, we can also produce ethanol. It's extraordinary," Prabowo explained."Thank you, the entire agricultural community in Indonesia. You worked hard. You were united. Within one year, we were self-sufficient. Within one year, we were standing on our own two feet. Within one year, we were independent of other nations," Prabowo emphasized.President Prabowo Subianto also expressed his confidence and pride in the achievement. He emphasized that this achievement in food self-sufficiency is a clear testament to the capabilities of the nation's best sons and daughters, while also demonstrating to the world that Indonesia is capable of achieving the ambitious targets it has set.Following his inauguration as president in October 2024, Prabowo targeted food self-sufficiency within four years. In reality, this target was achieved in just one year.Reporting by Indonesia WindowBagikan
