Indonesia becomes a member of the Council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for Region E (Asia and Australasia) for the 2023-2026 period, along with other 14 countries.

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesia was re-elected a member of the Council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) for Region E (Asia and Australasia) for the 2023-2026 period at the 22nd ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Bucharest, Romania, on Monday (Oct. 3).

Indonesia was elected along with 14 other countries, namely Australia, China, Japan, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, India, Jordan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Iraq, Iran and Kuwait, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement. his statement here on Tuesday.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that Indonesia received the 3rd most votes in the election as a member of the ITU Council, or as many as 157 votes, after the United Arab Emirates and India.

Indonesia carries a vision and agenda to increase connectivity that is equitable for all through capacity building, empowering women, and the principle of connecting the unconnected, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

According to the ministry, the vision and agenda are the main issues not only for Indonesia, but also for developing and less developed countries at the ITU.

Indonesia's work at the ITU has been very consistent, sustainable and contributive, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, adding that Indonesia has been an active member of the ITU since 1949 and has always served as a member of the ITU Council for the last four decades since 1982.

As a country which is active in pushing the ITU institutional reform agenda, Indonesia has proposed adding five seats to the ITU Council for Regions A (North and South America), D (Africa) and E (Asia and Australasia).

The re-election of Indonesia as a member of the ITU Council is not only a proof of acknowledgment of progress and achievements in the fields of information, communication and technology, but also a proof to the trust of the ITU member countries to Indonesia which is considered a country that has a consistent role in fighting for the interests of other developing countries at the ITU.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) responsible for many matters relating to information and communication technology.

Founded on May 17, 1865, as the International Telegraph Union, the ITU has made itself the oldest UN agency.
