A new strategic partnership has been signed by the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer.
Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, have officially agreed on a new strategic partnership between the Republic of Indonesia and the United Kingdom.
In his statement at Lancaster House, London, on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, the president stated that the United Kingdom is an important partner, which is great at technology and finance.
“We view the UK as a partner that can also participate significantly in our economy. They have technology, they have very strong financial resources, and they are interested in investing in Indonesia," he said.
According to President Prabowo, the partnership opens up opportunities for Indonesia to benefit from the UK's technology transfer and financial capabilities. "So I think this partnership will be very beneficial for both parties," he said.
Regarding strategic cooperation in the maritime sector, the president stated that the UK would support Indonesia's plan to build around 1,500 fishing vessels and improve fishing villages.
According to the head of state, strengthening the maritime sector aims to improve the welfare of fishermen while also improving the community's protein consumption.
"This is very strategic for us. It will greatly accelerate our economic growth and progress, especially in the maritime sector. We see that three-quarters of our homeland is sea, and our protein consumption by our people is still too low. We want to improve it," he noted.
The new strategic partnership between Indonesia and the UK is a follow-up to the Joint Statement on a New Strategic Partnership between the Republic of Indonesia and the United Kingdom, agreed by the two leaders in 2024.
This new strategic partnership reflects the strong commitment of both countries to deepening their existing relationship.
This new strategic partnership rests on four main pillars: strengthening economic growth; cooperation in the fields of climate, energy, and nature; enhancing defense and security; and human and community development.
Through these four pillars, Indonesia and the UK are committed to building an inclusive, sustainable, and strategic partnership, while strengthening the two countries' positions as key partners in the region and globally.
