Jakarta (Indonesia Window) - Indonesia's President Prabowo Subianto led a limited meeting with several ministers, regarding the development of plans for the giant sea wall, a national strategic project expected to protect the northern coastal areas of Java, at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday (Apr. 20).
Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Brian Yuliarto, stated that the giant sea wall project plays a vital role in protecting approximately 60 percent of industrial areas and more than 30 million residents in the affected areas.
Therefore, Brian stated that the ministry is encouraged to actively participate, particularly through research and innovation contributions from universities.
"Many research results on campus have been tested. One of them was successful in Indonesia's Demak City, Central Java Province's capital Semarang. We will also be asked to actively participate in that. Lecturers who have been conducting research on campus that supports the acceleration and efficiency of the giant sea wall development are being asked to get involved," Brian said.
As a follow-up, Brian stated that his ministry will soon invite professors and experts with expertise in related fields, including land development and reclamation.
Brian explained that these academics will not only provide technical studies but will also be directly involved in the implementation team led by the Head of the North Java Coast Management Authority.
"Even more than that, they will be directly involved in the team led by the Head of the Authority," Brian added.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, who also serves as the Head of the North Java Coast Management Agency, Didit Herdiawan Ashaf, stated that the project is currently in the planning stage.
The government is currently conducting in-depth studies on various aspects, particularly those related to construction.
"The timing of the plan is still being calculated because it relates to Indonesia's resources. We're utilizing them all. So, one of the main things is that we can utilize environmental issues. So, we're absorbing things related to waste," Didit said.
The government emphasized that accelerating the giant sea wall is not only about the speed of construction, but also the quality of planning. Collaboration among the government, academics, and industry players is key to ensuring that this project is technically sound, economically sound, and environmentally sustainable.
