Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – The per capita electricity consumption figure in Indonesia reaches 1,109 kilowatt hours (kWh) until September 2021, according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources.

This figure is equal to 92.2 percent of the target of 1,203 kWh per capita, said Director General of Electricity at the ministry Rida Mulyana at a press conference in Jakarta, Thursday (Oct. 21).

The government has targeted the electricity consumption rate per capita in the country to reach 1,408 kWh by 2024.

In an effort to increase electricity consumption, the government has set up a number of strategies to create new demand by promoting electric vehicles and stoves.

The construction of Public Electric Vehicle Charging Station is one of the government's efforts to attract people’s interest in using electric vehicles.

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources noted that currently the number of the stations has reached 187 units across 155 locations throughout Indonesia.

On the other hand, the government plans to export electricity from excess supply to neighboring Malaysia and Singapore through the ASEAN Power Grid program.

Based on data from the state-owned National Electricity Company (PLN) until the third quarter of 2021, the total electricity consumption in Indonesia reached 187.78 terawatt hours (TWh) or an increase of 4.42 percent compared to the same period last year.

Indications of a recovering economy could be seen from the growth in electricity consumption in the industrial sector which reached 10.63 percent or 58.04 TWh and has a share of 30.91 percent of total electricity consumption.

That figure makes the industrial sector the second highest electricity market share after the household sector of 46 percent with electricity consumption of 85.43 TWh.
