The Indonesian passports with a maximum validity period of 10 years are only given to Indonesian citizens who are 17 years old or married, and apart from these categories, passports are given for a period of five years.

Jakarta (Indonesia Window) – Indonesia’s Directorate General of Immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights has officially stipulated the country’s passports with a maximum validity period of 10 years, effective as of Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022.

The application of the new passport validity period is based on Article 2A of the Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia No. 18/2022 promulgated in Jakarta on Sept. 29, 2022, according to the Directorate General of Immigration in a written statement received here on Wednesday.

"Thank God the passport policy with a validity period of 10 years can be implemented starting October 12, 2022. We ask for support and advice during the transition period so that the immigration office can provide the best service to the people," the Acting Director General of Immigration, Widodo Ekatjahjana, said on Tuesday (Oct. 10).

Currently rules regarding the cost of non-tax state revenue of passport are under discussion, involving relevant stakeholders, Widodo explained.

People shall still pay the same fee as before, namely 350,000 rupiahs (some 22.8 U.S. dollars) for a non-electronic ordinary passport and 650,000 rupiahs (some 42.3 U.S. dollars) for an electronic ordinary passport, and this passport application fee is valid until the next regulation is issued, he added.

"The 10-year period does not apply to passports issued before the implementation date of the Minister of Law and Human Rights Regulation No. 18/2022," he said.

Article 2A paragraph (2) of the Minister of Law and Human Rights No. 18/2022 states, ordinary passports (electronic and non-electronic) with a maximum validity period of 10 years are only given to Indonesian citizens who are 17 years old or married, and apart from these categories, passports are given for a period of five years.

Especially for a child with dual citizenship, the validity period of the passport shall also adjust to the period until the child is required to choose his or her nationality.

For example, if the age of a child with dual citizenship is 18 years old when changing passports, the validity period of the passport shall be three years or until he or she turns 21 years old, and that age is the maximum age limit for a child with dual citizenship to determine his or her citizenship.

The Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights No. 18/2022 is an amendment to the Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights No. 8/2014 concerning Ordinary Passports and Travel Documents in Lieu of Passports.
