Dr. Syafiq Riza Basalamah systematically explained that aqidah, or spiritual belief, is the primary pillar that fundamentally determines the quality of each individual's behavior.
Tangerang, Banten (Indonesia Window) – In an effort to strengthen the increasingly dynamic social structure of modern society, Indonesia’s education expert Dr. Syafiq Riza Basalamah emphasized that the development of excellent character or morals must be rooted in a solid spiritual foundation.
This important message was delivered to thousands of participants at the CONNECT 2026 international forum, held on Sunday (January 25) at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition in Indonesia’s Tangerang City, Banten Province, as a bridge to building a more harmonious and integrated human civilization.
Dr. Syafiq Riza Basalamah explained that aqidah (the essence or main points of Islam), or spiritual belief, is the primary pillar that fundamentally determines the quality of each individual's behavior.
The prominent Islamic preacher emphasized that ethical deviations occurring in global society often indicate a rift in a person's fundamental values.
"A person with the most perfect faith is one who possesses the best standards of behavior and morals," he stated in his sermon.
He explained that the main indicator of a person's spiritual success lies not only in the quantity of rituals, but also in a tangible transformation in their daily attitudes.
From a self-development perspective, prayers are seen as a strategic instrument for seeking guidance toward the best character qualities, Dr. Syafiq said, encouraging the congregation not to focus solely on material demands but to specifically ask for protection from negative traits such as stinginess, impatience, and rudeness.
He further cited the example of noble prayers taught in the prophetic tradition: "O Allah, as You have beautified my physical creation, so beautify my morals".
This emphasizes that outward beauty must go hand in hand with beautiful behavior to create a harmonious social order.
All forms of worship, from prayer and zakat to the hajj, are positioned to have a transformative function in fostering social empathy and self-control, he explained.
Prayers are seen as filters to prevent evil deeds, while zakat (obligatory charities according to Islamic teachings), serves to cleanse the soul of egoism and foster concern for fellow human beings on the global stage.
Dr. Syafiq also emphasized that the process of character building is like physical exercise, requiring consistency, a struggle against desires, and continuous practice.
"Knowledge is gained through learning, and patience is gained through self-training". Those are the key message presented to motivate participants of the CONNECT IV event to continuously improve themselves.
In closing, Dr. Syafiq provided inclusive guidance for individuals to recognize their shortcomings for the sake of collective progress.
These steps include guidance from experienced mentors, having friends who are honest in providing feedback, and the ability to be open-minded and learn valuable lessons from criticism from enemies.
Optimism radiated at the end of the session, offering hope that by combining knowledge, prayers, and spiritual trainings, Indonesia can contribute to producing a global generation with both spiritual depth and noble character.
